Orchestre Virunga formed in Nairobi, Kenya in 1981. The following year they scored a big hit with Malako ( a version of which was recorded for this session) and a big selling debut album, It's Disco Time with Samba Mapangala.
The group were largely made up of musicians of Congolese origin. Mapangala was born in the Congo, before he decamped to Uganda in the mid-seventies, eventually settling in the United States when the gained international popularity in the nineties.
The group continue to perform across the globe and release albums, the most recent cd, African Classics, surfacing in 2008.
Here is the Orchestre's only session for the BBC. Sound quality is a bit washy, suggesting a MW recording on a clear night.
