Shonen Knife - The Hummingbird, Birmingham 27/11/1992

Earlier this month The Knife graced our ear drums with a new album, Overdrive, that was also given a limited vinyl release to keep the old stylus primed and ticking, so here's an excellent live set from the year that punk supposedly broke to compliment that.

This was the group's second trip to The Hummingbird, having been the opening act almost a year to the day for headliners Nirvana who were then, perhaps unknowingly, on the verge of global superstardom and that legendary appearance of Top Of The Pops. Shonen Knife's star was also rapidly ascending with regular features in the press and the release of their first UK album, Let's Knife, which contained 15 new recordings of songs that had previously appeared on Japanese-only albums.

After the release of Rock Animals in 1995, my interested in them waned: I felt they'd lost their punk pop sensibilities in favour of a hard, perhaps Nirvana-inspired, rockier approach. Fast forward to 2012 and a session for Marc Riley promoting Pop Tune and a by coincidence gig at Birmingham's Glee Club in October 2012 that I attended half-expecting to enjoy only the old songs, I became reconverted. Haven't managed to catch them on their current UK tour, alas, but hopefully they will return to these shores once more soonest.

  1. Thank you so much for this! Your blog first introduced me to Shonen Knife last year and I have been a fan ever since.

  2. Thanks so much for sharing this great gig. Love it! Is there any chance of a repost of the SK Peel sessions? Keep up the great work.

    2. I've added new links to the SK Peel sessions today.
Both seem to be working ok now.
